Ignorance in Voluntary and Intentional Actions

Christian Carbonell

What are the effects of ignorance on voluntary and intentional actions? The work of most philosophers suggests no distinction at all. While many have claimed that ignorance undermines voluntary action, others have similarly argued that intentional action suffers from the same condition. My aim in this talk is to challenge that view. I will start by motivating a normative view on which voluntary and intentional actions are subject to distinct criteria of causal correctness. From this, I will argue that such normative distinction suggests corresponding differences in their epistemic dimensions.
