The objective of this article is to provide a theoretical foundation for the term «social lie» and to establish its semantic framework. The article aims to conduct a comparative analysis of this phenomenon in the Polish and Ukrainian languages. the concept of (pro)social lies and their social role are examined, allowing for an investigation into the diverse semantic and pragmatic functions of keywords of the semantic field of social lies in the Polish and Ukrainian languages. The construction of the semantic field of social lies utilizes a formula based on Mixed contrast sets by Grandy. The semantic field of social lies is polycentric in structure, with two central components – propaganda and manipulation – around which other concepts with more distant lexical connections are grouped. Peripheral concepts such as disinformation, falsify, post-truth, and hypocrisy are all related to the manipulation of human behaviour and public opinion. Indoctrination, Newspeak, and agitation are peripheral concepts of propaganda that aim to impose specific ideologies and control information to sustain political regimes.
