The Laws, the Past and the Consequence Argument

Andreas Hüttemann

Universität zu Köln

According to the consequence argument, if determinism is true, what we do now is the consequence of laws of nature and events in the past. Since neither the laws nor the past are up to us what we do now is not up to us either. In the talk I will discuss how this argument depends on the modal status and the content of the fundamental laws of nature.
